Five of Swords

Uprighthollow victory · conflict · dishonor · winning at all costs
Reversedcompromise · ending resentment · past grievances · lingering malice

A smug, mocking warrior stands in the foreground, gathering up five scattered swords. In the distance, two defeated figures trudge away toward a choppy, turbulent shoreline under a sky torn apart by jagged, wind-swept clouds.

The victor has won the battle, but he has lost his community. The card illustrates the ultimate limitation of the unbridled ego, which isolates itself by treating every human interaction as a zero-sum game.

Upright

The Five of Swords exposes the dark side of competition. Upright, it represents a victory won through underhanded means, deceit, or a ruthless 'win at all costs' mentality. It warns that the cost of defeating your opponents will be your own long-term isolation and dishonor.

Reversed

Reversed, the desire for conflict begins to wane. It indicates a willingness to lay down weapons, seek a compromise, and move past old grievances. However, it can also signal a lingering malice where a toxic situation refuses to reach a clean resolution.
