The Devil

Uprightshadow self · attachment · addiction · materialism
Reversedreleasing limiting beliefs · detachment · reclaiming power · restoration

A horned, winged beast sits upon a dark pedestal, beneath which a naked man and woman are chained by their necks. On closer inspection, the loops of the chains are loose enough to be slipped over their heads at any moment.

The Devil holds an inverted torch that burns nothing but the baser instincts. He represents the classic scapegoat—the illusion that our imprisonment is caused by an external force rather than our own choices.

Upright

The Devil exposes the chains of the material illusion. Upright, it highlights areas where you have surrendered your freedom to addiction, toxic relationships, obsessive materialism, or limiting beliefs that convince you that you are powerless.

Reversed

Reversed, the Devil signals an awakening. You are recognizing your chains, initiating a break from addictive patterns, and reclaiming the personal power you had long surrendered to fear and base desire.
